Oli Wilson

Oli Wilson has been a PhD candidate at Otago University since April 2007, where he is studying modernity and tradition in music in Papua New Guinea. His supervisors are Dr Dan Bednrups, Associate Professor Henry Johnston, and Professor Glenn Summerhayes. He is planning two field trips to PNG, the first one in December 2007, and will base himself in Port Moresby. Oli is also a Teaching Assistant in Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies at Otago University. His other interests include popular Maori music, Aboriginal Australian Music, and Samoan music in Aotearoa.

Oli graduated with an honors degree in composition from Otago University in 2006. He also studied contemporary performance (piano), and ethnomusicology. He spent the summer of 2005-2006 researching popular Aboriginal Australian Music, at the Centre for Cross-Cultural Studies, Australian National University, on a Summer Scholarship. In 2006 he was awarded an ANU scholarship to attend the Chanted Tales workshop in Goroka, which lead him to form his PhD topic.
